Shaw to respond to property tax criticisms next Tuesday
MINISTER of Finance and Public Service Audley Shaw is expected to speak to the House of Representatives next Tuesday, on the Government’s response to criticisms of the new property tax adjustments
According to Minister of Information Senator Ruel Reid, the Government recognises concerns expressed regarding the adjustments, and appreciates the importance of property ownership to national development.
He said that it was on that basis that the Cabinet appointed a special committee on April 3 to review the issues.
“Cabinet today (yesterday) received submissions from the special committee and concluded its policy deliberations. Instructions were also delivered to Tax Administration Jamaica, and other relevant agencies, for the fine-tuning and implementation of decisions made. Details of the proposed adjustments and related matters will be made by the Minister of Finance, the Hon Audley Shaw in Parliament next week,” Senator Reid said.
He added that, in the interim, no penalties or interest will accrue on tax assessed in respect of the financial year 2017/2018.
