#CariftaGames: Jamaica head into final session with 55 medals
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica will head into the final session of the 2017 FLOW CARIFTA Games this afternoon with 55 medals already amassed.
The team has won 24 gold, 19 silver, and 12 bronze.
Tissanna Hickling of St Jago High claimed gold in the Under-20 girls’ long jump in the morning session. Meanwhile, Danielle Sloley of Immaculate Conception finished sixth in the Under-18 girls’ javelin with a throw of 37.52m. The event was won by Latia Saunders of the Bahamas who threw 45.29m. Cornwall College’s Kobe-Jordan Rhooms also finished sixth, jumping 2.05m, in the boys’ Under-20 high jump, which was won in a new Carifta Games record of 2.22m by St Kitt’s and Nevis’ Jermaine Francis.
Both Jamaicans competing in the boys’ Under-18 110m hurdles, Dejour Russell (13.90) and Jeremy Farr (13.95) made it through to the finals with the second and third fastest qualifying times respectively.
However, Jamaica will not have representatives in the Under-18 boys’ 4x400m relay after a protest for a disqualification was turned down. The team of Ramone Lindo, Jevaughn Powell, Rovane Williams, and Antonio Watson was disqualified for a baton change outside the changeover zone under IAAF rule 170.19.
The final session begins at 2:00 pm Jamaica time, with Jamaica chasing their 86-medal tally of last year.
