U-17 Boyz eliminated in heavy Mexico defeat

Jamaica 1 Verley (72nd) Mexico 5 Torres (24th & 35th), Lopez (32nd, 62nd), Vasquez (61st)

PANAMA CITY, Panama — Head Coach Andrew Edwards says that though his Young Reggae Boyz showed some measure of response in their final group game, the effort was just not good enough against a supremely prepared Mexico. In their final Group C contest of the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship here, Jamaica’s dream of a World Cup repeat went up in smoke with their 1-5 defeat to Mexico at the Estadio Maracana on Sunday night. Jairo Torres got a double in the 24th and 35th minutes, so too Daniel Lopez in minutes 32 and 62.Adrian Vasquez added another in the 63rd. Jeremy Verley cut the deficit in the 72nd minute. The victory propelled Mexico to the six-team Classification round in second place on six points, joining the the USA, who had clipped El Salvador 1-0 to formalise their progression to the next round on maximum nine points.Jamaica finished third in the group with three points, earned in a 3-1 triumph over El Salvador. Jamaica also lost to the USA, going down 0-5 in the first match of the group.“Overall I don’t think we did too badly, but the performance was not consistent and the effort was not sustained at a high enough level,” said Edwards as he reflected on the Mexico contest.“Mexico had scored within the first five minutes of their previous games and we were very careful not to have that happen to us.But we had a lapse in concentration with three key players in the defence that led to the first goal, and once that first goal went in, I thought our confidence went with it,” Edwards told the Jamaica Observer yesterday. The Jamaica coach thought the Young Boyz showed a bit more purpose in the second half, being able to do more as the Mexicans obviously decelerated, knowing they had the game sewed up.“At half-time we settled the team and we said to them, ‘We have nothing to lose, so try and play for at least 45 minutes in the tournament,’ but we still came out a little bit shaky.“Once we made a couple of substitutions we started to play better, although Mexico backed away a little bit and gave us a little more space, as they weren’t as aggressive with their pressing game as they were in the first period and that gave us a little more time on the ball,” Edwards noted. After a cagey first 20 minutes where both teams exchanged possession regularly, the Mexicans slowly imposed themselves offensively, using the flanks to good effect. It was on one of those moves that Mexico got their go-ahead goal in the 14th minute.Following through on a ball from midfield, Andres Perez latched on, glided by Coby Atkinson on the left side, before measuring a low ball inside for Torres, who made easy work of beating Tajay Griffiths from 12 yards. The CONCACAF giants were 2-0 up in the 32nd minute when Jamaica’s defence was outdone by a cheeky scoop pass that sent Lopez clear on goal and who blasted into the roof of the net, though he appeared to be in an offside position.A third goal came three minutes later when Torres got the better of Shane Ricketts down the right channel, cutting inside to beat Griffiths at his near post with a firm, low, left-footed shot. For the remainder of the first half and the start of the second half, it was one-way traffic going Mexico’s way. In the 51st minute, “El Tri” threatened down Jamaica’s right side with Perez who darted into the danger area, but his lunging shot was blocked by Griffiths. In a rare attempt at goal, Jamaica’s Kaheem Parris forced the opposing keeper into action in the 53rd minute with his favourite left foot, and while it was a welcome change of scenery, the move, though delightful, lacked the decisive edge as Cesar Lopez saved without much fuss.Mexico added another in the 61st minute when Vasquez beat Griffiths easily from inside the box. A minute later, the Spanish-speaking armada made it 5-0 when Lopez got his second ramming home as the Jamaica defence crumbled.Even though the game was not going their way at that moment, the Young Boyz managed a combination at the other end that earned a free kick at the edge of the box in the 72nd minute.Verley’s curling spot kick was a beauty and Mexico’s goalkeeper Lopez was beaten all ends up from 20 yards. To their credit, the Jamaicans looked positive towards the end, but the game as a contest was all over by the time the late flourish came.Host Panama, Mexico and Costa Rica will compete in one pool of the Classification stage, while the USA, Cuba and Honduras will contest the other. The four top teams from these play-offs will secure spots to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in India October 6-28.TEAMS: Jamaica — Tajay Griffiths, Jamoi Topey, Kimani Gibbons, Coby Atkinson, Shane Ricketts, Jeremy Verley, Jermaine Lyons (Blake White 61st), Renato Campbell, Nicque Daley, Kaheem Parris (Kendall Edwards 68th), Ricardo McIntosh (83rd).
