KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ), as part of its National Compliance Plan, is working to make its facilities more accessible to persons with disabilities.

Communications Officer at the TAJ, Leighton Beckles, in an interview at a Visioning Workshop held at the Jamaica Conference on Thursday, said the move is part of the Agency’s goal to improve service and collect taxes more efficiently.

“The TAJ has been investing heavily in customer service. Our Cross Roads office is one of our newer locations and has facility for the disabled. We are looking at having that at several [of our] locations across the island. We are taking everything into consideration and all facets of the society who would need to interact with our facilities and use our services,” he said.

The TAJ’s move comes as the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities gets ready to launch its multimedia campaign this month to promote the Disabilities Act, passed in 2014.

This campaign will also focus on the development of the first two Codes of Practice for the disabled community. They are the Right to Education and Training, and the Right to Employment.

The main objective of the Visioning Workshop was to review the state of customer service in the public sector and to agree on elements of service excellence.

The workshop was organised by the Public Sector Transformation and Modernisation Division, in conjunction with the Social Development Commission (SDC).
