Molynes blank Cooreville to earn promotion
Molynes United defeated Cooreville Gardens FC 4-0 in Friday evening’s semi-final of the Magnum/KSAFA Major League at Constant Spring on Friday to book one of two places to next season’s Super League competition.
Molynes are set to face either Pembroke Hall or Mountain View in the final. Both those teams were slated to meet in the other semi-final last night.Molynes lost their only game of the season in the semis of the 2015-2016 season. And remembering the pain of that defeat, they took control of play against Cooreville Gardens from the opening whistle by referee Malica Reid. To support intent, on 17 minutes Ali Henry put Molynes ahead with a scrambled goal from a goal-mouth tangle.Damion Thomas then made it 2-0 14 minutes later with a well-timed and powerfully struck left-footed volley from just inside the penalty area. The second period produced two more goals. Ramone Rose (85th minute) and second-half substitute Remailo Wilson (90+2) guaranteed advancement for Molynes.“Winning is always a good habit to cultivate,” winning Coach Calvert Fitzgerald said in his post-match interview.“Last year was my first season with the club, having gone there just a few weeks before the season started, and we did not lose a game until reaching this stage of the competition,” he continued.Cooreville Gardens, the winners of Zone A of the Magnum/KSAFA Major League, had defeated Molynes during the preliminary stage of the season and bitterly held off the marauding Molynes battalion for most of the second half.“Despite losing, I must say we had a wonderful season. My only disappointment is that we just did not turn for this final game. We did not show that hunger; the hunger that we wanted it more than Molynes did and paid the penalty,” said Tamera-Ann Williams, the Cooreville Gardens coach.—Hurbun Williams
