$72-m islandwide flood mitigation project gets under way
The National Works Agency (NWA) is to spend just under $72 million to undertake flood mitigation works across the island in preparation for the start of the 2017 North Atlantic hurricane season.
Manager, communications and customer service at the National Works Agency Stephen Shaw says that the works, which are to include the cleaning of gullies and drains, de-bushing, and the trimming of road banks, are routine.Shaw says that the focus of the programme will be on critical drains, especially those located in flood-prone areas.Among the areas where drain cleaning is slated to be undertaken are the Bamboo River and Seaforth drains in St Thomas, the Cooling Spring, Grant’s Gate and School House Corner drains in Portland, the Flemming’s Gully in Clarendon, and the Johnson Pen drain in St Catherine.Drain-cleaning activities commenced on May 1. The NWA said the works are expected to be completed within a month.
