Gregg continues climb
Kyle Gregg continued his push to the top as he grabbed his second victory in the Drivers Rallysport Club’s Sprint two, dubbed Lydford Rewind, at Lydford Mines in St Ann last Sunday.
“We have been unbeaten for the first half of the year and we plan to win them all to stamp our dominance,” Gregg told Jamaica Observer’s Auto magazine.With a new course layout in the soggy bauxite-covered lanes of the Lydford Mines, Gregg took his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX to the front of the pack, thrilling the few fans that braved the threatening weather to watch.“It was a very fast event. Going downhill in fifth gear flat is not easy. It’s the fastest I have been in a rally car,” he said.Chasing him to the finish line was the other Evolution IX of Timothy Stewart, co-driven by veteran Stephen Gunter. Stewart provided as much competition as he could in the face of Gregg’s two missing rivals, Joel Jackson and Fraser McConnell. Jackson had no working car to tackle the event, while McConnell is overseas.“Overall, I think my performance wasn’t too bad as it was another completely new stage for me. The more I drive these iconic stages, I will just get better. You have to remember Kyle and the others in the field have years of experience over me,” Stewart said.The pace between the two was even hotter as both were dealing with minor mechanical issues.Rounding out the podium positions with a creditable third was Thomas Hall. While the two up front were part of the four-wheel drive turbocharged JN8 class, Hall kept touch as best as he could in his naturally aspirated Lancer GT, and in the process holding off the charge of his very fast JA3 class rival Sebastien Rae.“The fight with him was close and fun, but the Lancer still needs some work and I’m learning how to drive it faster. The course was also well executed by the organisers,” Hall explained.Rae may have been chasing Hall all day, but in the championship run, which ends the day and provides the overall points, he dropped back to fifth after being beaten to fourth by the Ford Escort of Brian Fong Yee.
