No sweat for ‘Ian’
It turned out to be a stroll in the ‘Park’ for the Wayne DaCosta-trained Ian Links in the $1- milion Reynold “Ren” Gonzalves Memorial Cup feature at Caymanas Park yesterday as the bay colt slammed rivals by 16 ½ lengths going 10 furlongs (2,000m).
Ridden by apprentice Jerome Innis,
Ian Links, who was sent off as the 1-5 favourite in the field of six runners, raced in close touch as
Ballon D’Or (Aaron Chatrie) led the field over
Miracle Star (Jevvanne Erwin) and
Scar (Dane Dawkins) for most of the way.Cruising nicely along the backstretch, Innis let loose approaching the four-furlong (800m) marker and in a flash,
Ian Links challenged
Ballon D’Or for the lead and began to open up approaching the final bend, going on to win effortlessly without breaking a sweat in the Overnight Allowance event.
Ballon D’or out battled rivals for second money, with
Scar finishing in third spot ahead of
Miracle Star.Owned by Ian Lodge,
Ian Links (
Fearless Vision –
Witchcraft) ran the distance in 2:10.0 minutes backed by splits of 24.4, 51.1, 1:15.3 and 1:42.4.It was the second winner of the 10-race for DaCosta as his
A Thousand Stars (Omar Walker) won the 10th race over six and a half furlongs (1,300m).It was a bitter, sweet win for the connections, however, as having not raced since November of last year,
A Thousand Stars, who had opened up some five lengths on the field turning for home, stumbled in the last 50 metres of the race but was able to cross the winning post, winning by over two lengths. As it turned out, the four-year-old dark bay broke her right front foot and had to be carried off the racetrack. It was also Walker’s second winner as he earlier rode
