Sweet Dimension to make report in Sports Journalists of Jamaica Trophy
A lively group of $350,000-$300,000 claimers look set to headline a balanced, 10-race, midweek card in the Sports Journalists of Jamaica Trophy feature at Caymanas Park today.
Posted on the brow of the 10th race call, the sports journalists trophy highlighter among three-year-olds and upward with native-bred five-year-olds (NW3), has attracted quite a decent field of 11 starters going six furlongs (1,200 metres) for a purse of $690,000.The sports journalists trophy call will go to post at approximately 5:05 pm, with the first race at 1:00 pm.Also down to support the lower-end feature is a top end Open Allowance call for threeyear- olds and upward going over the five fourlongs (1,000 metres) straight course, for a purse of $1.15 million. In this snappy jaunt, recent winner Talented Tony K, who had Poker Star behind in their least meeting, will once again renew rivalry but on much worse terms, with comparable allround matching speed of Polly B, Potcheen, Uppa Tune, Crucial Appeal and King D.And even with his emphatic recent win, Talented Tony K, in this small but electrifying field of seven, will have it all to do.The Open Allowance call will go to post at approximately 4:05 pm. Crucial Appeal won his last race over today’s distance on March 4 in a quick 56.4 seconds, and if he can reproduce that effort then the seven-year-old chestnut gelding should walk away with the top honours.Poker Star has had two good runs since returning from injury, and should be cherry ripe for this one. If he is at his best, Poker Star should put these away with minimum fuss. But that depends on which Poker Star shows up. On what looks to be a competitive card, the Sports Journalists Trophy feature could justify its apt positioning by the inclusion of some useful runners in the class. Some of whom will thoroughly enjoy the distance are Differentgeneration, Cheers, Demolition Boy, Big Machine Links, Sweet Dimension and Lazza. The winner could easily come from the first three but Sweet Dimension and Lazza could be in the mix also.Differentgeneration won his first race over this distance, as it continued to be a favourite distance of his, and with Paul Francis in the irons a repeat is not unlikely.Cheers has the speed and tenacity to feature prominently once again with the distance increased. Jevvanne Erwin has replaced Shane Ellis for this and, with the increase in distance, the six-year-old bay gelding could return to prevail.Demolition Boy is something of an enigma but returning in this sort of company for this short sprint could come alive now for trainer Welsh Souter and jockey Renardo McNaughton.
