Rising star in the Senate
Dear Editor,
Not everyone has the vision and foresight to spot a talent, especially if it’s raw or a rough diamond.
Last week the nation saw a rising star in the Senate. Who is Kerensia Morrison?
Morrison is a teacher by profession, the caretaker for St Catherine North Central and Angels Division.
When she was named senator I was surprised, but listening to her now I’m more convinced Prime Minister Andrew Holness is not only a genius, but has the eye for talent. Her name came up in the local government election, where she was slated to debate but was pulled at the last minute due to health reasons. Many feel that were she a part of the team in that second and last debate with now mayors Delroy Williams and Richard Creary she would’ve been the Kenisha Allen of that debate by neutralising a dangerous Venesha Phillips. Based on what I’ve heard, she’s a great communicator and debator. The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) wouldn’t have lost that debate, and she would’ve given the JLP the St Catherine Parish Council by taking home her division.
If the Andrew Holness Administration plays its cards right it should persuade her to throw her hat in the ring if a deputy general secretary spot is up for grabs. She’s a people person and a passionate politician. She is the assistant general secretary of Area Council Two, therefore she has experience in that field. She may one day be the first female general secretary of the JLP and a great minister.
I think she’s Rose Leon’s reincarnation — the first Iron Lady of a political party in the English-speaking Caribbean, who was served as chairman of the JLP from 1948 to her 1960.
I am pleading to Morrison, please believe in yourself and be more vocal in the Senate.
