WHAT THEY SAY: Winston Kong RACEHORSE OWNER
When did start to own horses?
I went to the races very often at Knutsford Park in my short pants. At that time, I was just following people to the track until I got attached to the sport. I came to the very first day of racing here at Caymanas Park in 1959 and that shows you how much I love this sport. So, you can say, I have been in racing from a very long, long time now. This is something that I enjoy doing and will continue to enjoy. I have no regrets choosing a path in racing, as I have accomplished a lot during my time in racing and hopefully that will continue.
Which horse was your first winner?
This is something that I don’t remember. It was a very, very long time ago and I really don’t remember the horse’s name that I won my first race with. What I do know is that it was a great feeling for anyone when they win their first race. I was a very happy man and because, I love the sport so much, every time I win a race, I am always happy. That is what it is all about – winning races. There is great joy going to the winners’ enclosure to lead-in a winner especially when you are also the breeder of the winning horse and I have done so many times, and I give thanks.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
I don’t really win at very long odds as my horses are always selling as the favourites. My trainer (Wayne DaCosta) doesn’t have many long odds winners as well but I believe I have won at odds of 4-1 before or something like that. For me, it doesn’t matter the odds I win at, as whenever my horses past the winning post in front, I am a happy man. It is always a joy when my horses win races. The odds in the end simply don’t matter, winning is everything for an owner.
The best horse you have owned?
It is very hard to say who is the best horse that I have owned in my career. I have owned some very good horses but I can’t really pick out any one horse, as all are special to me in different ways. However, She’s A Maneater has to be one of them. She is a very good filly who has given me my first Jamaica Derby win. I also had a horse by the name of Run Tat Run that was on course to win a Classic race and got sick the Friday night and never got the opportunity to run in the Classics and this was after she had beaten all contenders in the big two-year-old races. Run Tat Run won four races straight for me.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
Some very horses have graced the racetrack at Caymanas Park and to choose one horse as the best is always difficult. To me, however, if a choice has to be made, the best of them all was Legal Light. He was a very good racehorse who was always consistent. He won some very good races and won them impressively as well. The racing record of Legal Light speaks for itself as to the type of horse he was.
Who has influenced your time as an owner the most?
Well, from I am in racing a lot of people, inside and outside of the sport, have given excellent support for which I am very grateful. If there is one person, I have to make special mention of that would by my trainer for many years, Wayne DaCosta. I strongly believe that he has influenced my time in racing the most. He has been great to me and he continues to support me and I must say thank you to him for his support and level of understanding.
