Jamai Raja heads field of 11 chasing purse of $1 million
Jamai Raja should be a favourite in the top-rated Overnight Allowance race at Caymanas Park today.

Jamai Raja heads field of 11 chasing purse of $1 million

With no trophy race carded, a mixed field of aspiring four-year-olds, along with a few established older horses going to post in an Overnight Allowance call for three-year-olds and upward, will take centre stage at Caymanas Park today.

The Richard Azan-part owned and trained Jamai Raja heads a field of 11 runners going nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) for a purse of $1 million and he will be hell-bent on returning to the winners’ enclosure from which he has been absent since November last year.

Jamai Raja‘s preparation signals intent, and with trainer Azan calling for his two-time champion jockey Shane Ellis to partner the four-year-old gelded son of Performing Magic, he should not disappoint.

This follows his effort on June 24 when finishing an encouraging third by five lengths in a fast six-furlong (1,200m) dash, under the apprentice Bebeto Harvey.

This was only his second run as a four-year-old. In his last race as a three-year-old, Jamai Raja finished fourth in the Diamond Mile after breaking slowly. He has not yet broken the tardy gate habit, but did win three races on the gallop before the Diamond Mile with second over today’s distance. He completed the journey in a fast run time of 1:54.1 minutes carrying 53.0kg as he will today.

With the exception of the debutant Kalamata, who is an unknown entity at this stage, all the other runners are capable of getting the distance to receive consideration.

The seven-year-old gelding has been undulating between Open Allowance and Overnight Allowance through much of his career and is fit enough to give a good account of himself amongst these, especially with the champion trainer Wayne DaCosta calling for the services of the champion jockey Omar Walker.

Marvellous Marva is already a winner over the distance, but has to improve on her time to be of any real threat to Jamai Raja, Royal Vibes, Houdini’s Magic, Timeforarms and to a lesser extent Awesome Destiny.

Kalamata ( Sir Percy — Kalamkas), the English-bred bay filly, has two wins from eight career starts in Great Britain, and based on her exercise gallops, she should prove competitive here.

Trained by Fitznahum Williams, Kalamata, in her last three workouts, has gone 1:12.4 minutes and 1:13.0 minutes for six furlongs (1,200m) before cruising four furlongs (800m) in 47.4 seconds pulling up the five furlong (1,000m) over the straight in 1:004 minutes. She is definitley one to watch in the race.
