Chase, Taylor snatch top cricket awards

Young West Indies all-rounder Roston Chase joined Jamaica and West Indies female star Stafanie Taylor in sweeping the the key Cricket West Indies (CWI)/ West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) awards at the Jamaica Pegasus on Friday night.

Chase grabbed the four big awards, including Cricketer of the Year, while Taylor copped the three female awards at the 14th staging of the WIPA award — the fifth edition jointly with the CWI — to recognise outstanding achievements over the 2016/17 season.

Chase, 25, who recently made his transition to international cricket, was winning the prestigious Cricketer of the Year award for the first time.

The bowling all-rounder from Barbados was also named Test Cricketer of the Year; First-Class Four-Day Cricketer of the Year, and Emerging Player of the Year.

Chase won a place in West Indies Test team after strong showings with bat and ball in the 2015/16 Professional Cricket League (PCL), where he scored 710 runs in 10 matches at an average of 59.16. He also took 23 wickets in that same season at an average of 17.26.

During the West Indies home series against India in July-August last year, Chase proved that he belonged when he finished with figures of five for 121 and batted through all of the fifth day to score an unbeaten 137 and lead his side to an improbable draw at Sabina Park.

In only his second Test, Chase became only the fourth West Indian — after Denis Atkinson, Collie Smith and Sir Garfield Sobers — to take a five-wicket haul and score a hundred in the same Test match.

“It feels good to get this award at such a young age… to get an award means I’m doing something good, so it is just to continue in that vein and do the right things and hopefully win some more awards,” the tall off-spinner told journalists.

Though surprised by at least two of the awards he won, Chase pointed out that he was always confident in his abilities and is even more pleased that his preparation is now bearing fruit.

“To be honest, I was mainly expecting the First-Class Cricketer of the Year because I had a really outstanding season, but I wasn’t too sure about the others. I thought I would be in line for the Test Cricketer as well, but the overall Cricketer of the Year was the biggest surprise for me,” Chase noted.

Meanwhile, Taylor, who is away with the West Indies in England for the ICC Women’s World Cup, had her crowning glory last year when she led West Indies to the Women’s World Twenty-20 title.

They defeated three-time champions Australia in a thrilling finale, with Taylor making a crucial 59 to finish the tournament as the leading run-scorer with 246 runs. She also picked up eight wickets and was named Player of the Tournament.

The 26-year-old, who at one point won the Player of the Year award eight times consecutively, has now achieved a ninth overall hold on the prestigious award to go along with her two other awards of the night.

She was also named West Indies One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 Cricketer of the year.

Another Jamaican, Andre Russell, was named West Indies Twenty20 Player of the Year, while West Indies Captain Jason Holder won the One-Day International Player of the Year award.

Jamaican Chris Gayle won the newly implemented CWI/WIPA Outstanding Foundation Award for his investment into young cricketers and the community at large.

All-rounder Dwayne Bravo was named Caribbean T20 Player of the Year and Ashley Nurse copped the First-Class Limited-Overs Player of the Year award, while Guyana won the award for First-Class Team of the Year.

Joshua Bishop was named Under-19 Player of the Year, while Guyana copped the award for Under-19 Team of the Year.

Former Jamaican batsman Cleveland Davidson was given the WIPA Lifetime Achievement Award for his service, while Walter Eden St John received the equivalent award from CWI.
