KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Janieve Russell won the women’s 400m hurdles at the London Diamond League in a season’s best 54.02 sec and became the seventh fastest woman this season.

Russell, who was fourth at the Jamaican Championship,  reversed the placings on both Leah Nugent and Ristananna Tracey, who were ahead of her in Jamaica. Nugent was seventh in 55.03 and Tracey ninth in 55.61.

American Cassandra Tate was second in 54.59 with Wenda Nel of South Africa third in 54.73. Home girl Eilidh Doyle was fourth in 54.82.

Russell, who missed out on a spot to the London World Championship, was just outside her personal best of 53.96.

“Executing my race was so important today. I’m grateful for the win and, as unfortunately I won’t be at the World Championships in August, it was a great experience to race here in London,” said Russell.

“When I came off the final bend I knew I was in a good position, so to come through strongly over the final 100m was a pleasing aspect,” she added.
