ST JAMES, Jamaica – A Canadian woman was fined a combined $1.85 million or 18 months in prison and slapped with a further three-year sentence, when she appeared before the St James Parish Court on cocaine charges on Tuesday, July 4.

Convicted is Taneish Nickie.

According to reports from the narcotics police, about 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 21, last year, Nickie was at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James in the process of boarding a flight destined for Toronto, Canada.

During a search of her luggage, cocaine was found concealed in food packaging sachets. The drug weighed a total of 5.7 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of J$6,822,900, the police say.

Nickie was charged with attempting to export cocaine and possession of cocaine. For the exportation she was fined J$1 million or nine months imprisonment and for the possession she was fined J$850,000 or nine months imprisonment.

Nickie is also required to serve a mandatory sentence of three years at hard labour.
