Kingston Wharves, Campari into domino semi-finals

Title aspirants Kingston Wharves and Campari are through to the semi-finals of the 2017 National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB) Kingston & St Andrew Region/Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Business House Division One League after comfortable victories in their quarter-final matches at the National Housing Trust (NHT) Car Park last Friday.

Kingston Wharves showed why they are the three-time defending champions when they outplayed National Commercial Bank 118-105 in their quarter-final match.

Beaten finalists for the last two seasons Campari, who are unbeaten in the league, made their intention clear when they blanked Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) 152-101 to book their semi-final spot.

In other quarter-final results, former champions, the re-energised Seprod, whipped Carib Cement Company 142-104, while Wray & Nephew Limited got the better of Division Two champion Urban Development Corporation 110-105 in a close battle.

In Division Two, the unbeaten NHT defeated Cari-Med 131-110; Ministry of Finance (MOF) easily brushed aside Stewart’s Automotive 139-105; Jamaica Observer beat Sagicor Group 136-109 and Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), who had lost two times this season to Registrar General’s Department, turned the tables on their opponents with a 135-130 victory.

The semi-finals in both divisions take place today at NHT’s venue.

In Division One, Kingston Wharves should reach yet another final as they tackle the lesser-fancied Wray & Nephew Limited in their semi-final match. Kingston Wharves have already defeated their opponents three times this season 135-120 in the first preliminary round and 117-114 in the fifth preliminary round in the league and 55-53 in the semi-final of the knockout championship. It should be a similar result today as Kingston Wharves hold a 8-0 record over Wray & Nephew Limited in their last eight meetings.

Campari will start favourites against Seprod in their semi-final match. Based on their performances throughout the competition, Campari are given the edge over a very determined Seprod team. However as a former champion, Seprod know what it takes to be on the big scene and will take the fight to Campari. It’s a Kingston Wharves and Campari final next week.

In the lower division, the mighty MOF meet newcomers PAJ in their semi-final match up. MOF, who have only lost once this season, should easily put away their opponents.

However, as records have shown, MOF tend to choke when it comes to the semi-finals of the competition. MOF were fancied to get the better of Digicel, who they had beaten on many occasions, at this stage in the competition last year and couldn’t carry on, losing 82-128. This time is a different scenario as PAJ have no experience and should falter.

In the second semi-final match, it is a tough one to call as it can go either way for Jamaica Observer and NHT. Both teams have met two times in the past with each team coming away with a victory apiece. But based on performance this season NHT look the better team in terms of winning games, as they are unbeaten, although their victories came against weaker opponents this season compared to Jamaica Observer.

Like MOF, Jamaica Observer have a tendency to also choke at the semi-final stage. It should be an interesting game with NHT being the favourites in what will be a close battle. Both winners will advance to the higher division next year.

The matches are scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm.
