SCORES of teenagers converged at Moneague College in St Ann for the five-day ‘Campvention 2017’, which was hosted by The Kiwanis Club of North St Andrew.

From June 29, approximately 150 children in Kiwanis Builders Clubs from eight sponsored schools across the Corporate Area, along with 30 faculty advisors and Kiwanians, were transported to the camp site for a series of activities designed to empower and also entertain.

Among the activities were a concert, talent show, karaoke, educational tours, sports, a day at the beach, and a special dinner and social.

“What the children learn, we hope, will form a lasting impression,” said Campvention chairman, Barry Miller. “Together, we will learn more about Kiwanis and how we can, together, strive to build better communities.”

The objectives of the Builders Club and, by extension, the camp, are to provide opportunities for youth to work together in service, develop their leadership potential and moral character, and encourage loyalty to school, community and nation.

Campvention, which took place under the club’s Youth Leadership Transformation through Service Leadership Programme, is a part of the club’s continuing efforts to put children first, and is centred on fun, friendship, and fellowship.

The camp, which has been held annually since 1978, has been hosted in nine parishes across the island over the years, and was notably absent last year due to lack of sponsorship. However, the Kiwanis Club of North St Andrew has sought its return and intends to ensure it remains a yearly project.
