Model and Marketing Exec — Jeneque Pinnock
Recently teenAGE chatted with model and media and advertising executive, Jeneque Pinnock. Known as @jenalecia on Instagram and Twitter, she has amassed thousands of followers online all while keeping busy. Read below to find out how she balances work and play, what it takes to get and keep tons of followers and how to dress to impress, among other things.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?Jeneque: I’d like to think I’m a bit of both. With 16-hour days being the norm, I have to be both in order to maximise my time. Time management is everything!Which were you in high school: the nerd, popular girl or the loner?Jeneque: I went to Campion College, home of overachievers. That environment really nurtured my drive and hunger for excellence. While I was a top performer in high school, I appreciated the importance of being rounded. I was involved in quite a few extra-curricular activities, including Debating Society, Student Council, Dance Society and Interact Club. I don’t think you could put me in any one category. If you could have any super power what would it be?Jeneque: I would want to fly – that’s free travel right there! I’d be flying all over.. without having to pay to do it. Sounds like a sweet deal. What would you say is the key to the perfect selfie?Jeneque: I actually don’t love selfies. I prefer being able to see [or show] the environment and share an experience rather than just oh, here’s another picture of me. Good lighting is always key though. How do you dress to impress? What tips would you give to teenAGE readers who want to achieve a stylish look on a budget?Jeneque: Looking polished on a budget really comes down to focusing on wardrobe essentials – and then building your closet on that foundation. Don’t splurge on trends; stock up on classics. Spend wisely! There are some essentials you’ll need, like a crisp white shirt, versatile pants and neutral shoes. Buying separates also allows you to mix and match. You have over 23,000 Instagram followers! Any tips for getting (and keeping) followers?Jeneque: When I joined Instagram a few years ago my aim was to document happy and memorable times in my life, I saw it as a digital scrapbook. I think people gravitated to me sharing my experiences. Whether it’s a dryland tourist road trip, an event I attended, a shot from a recent modeling job… I’m open to sharing snippets of my life. That’s what social media is all about. Overall, I think people like seeing what’s happening with you and can sense when you’re being genuine. Don’t focus so much on the numbers but on sharing in an organic way – ‘followers’ will come if you’re being yourself. You’re a media and advertising account executive, as well as a model. Any advice for TEENs with lofty dreams or with more than one career path they hope to pursue?Jeneque: I’ll share some advice my boss often gives: Own it. Keep it simple. Get it done. Own everything you do and pursue your goals wholeheartedly. Don’t over complicate things. And of course, get the job done. We have the same 24 hours in our day as Oprah and Beyoncé! We can commit to more than one passion, as long as we prioritise well. How do you spend your downtime?Jeneque: I am big on Bucket Listing! Each month, I aim to do at least one new thing: conquer a fear, do something adventurous, visit a new hot spot.. life is for living. Making time for loved ones is important to me as well; I cherish downtime spent with people closest to me.What’s next for you?Jeneque: I’m currently reading for an international diploma in Digital Marketing and will be looking to pursue my Master’s in the coming year.. All while juggling career and personal life. Wish me luck!
Jeneque: If you’re dressing to impress, you’re going about it the wrong way. You should always dress to feel confident, to be comfortable in your own skin and dress for the occasion. People will gravitate towards that. If you’re wearing something and you’re really owning it then you’re guaranteed to look and feel your best.
