Granville Jaguars take WBA League crown
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Granville Jaguars made up for last year’s let-down by winning their second Western Basketball Association iCool/iDrade Elite Basketball League (EBL) title in three years with a 2-1 victory over defending champions Catherine Hall All-Stars.
Granville Jaguars won game three of the best-of-three finals 84-76, played at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, on Sunday.
Last year Granville Jaguars walked off the court during the final, forfeiting the title they had won the previous year.
On Sunday Leroy Lawrence scored a game-high 22 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Granville Jaguars over Catherine Hall, who had tied up the series at one game all on Saturday night by winning Game two 79-77.Granville had won the first game on Thursday 81-69.
After a slow start, Catherine Hall battled back from a deficit that exceeded 20 points and cut it to seven late in the fourth quarter, but Granville responded with another surge to ensure the win.
Granville led 21-16 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 13 points at half-time 47-34, and were up 66-50 at the end of the third quarter, before Catherine Hall, led by Vaugh Corke, who had 17 points, mounted a comeback.
Corke picked up his fourth foul near the end of the third quarter and had to sit out the early minutes in the fourth quarter, while Granville’s Dave Black and Cleon Morgan also played with four fouls.
Black, who missed the second game, and Levar Rose, both scored 18 points for Granville, while Goyan Malcolm supported Corke with 14 points and had six rebounds, Craig Dorman scored 13 points, with Jermaine Rerrie and Christopher Gibbons both had 10 points.
