Subbie takes feature as Robles dominate
Subbie provided his rider Ameth Robles with a well-deserved three-timer as well as winning the Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association of Jamaica (TOBA) Trophy on the 11-race card at Caymanas Park yesterday.
After trying his hand at and being outclassed in the Classic races, Subbie, a three-year-old bay colt ( Deputy Glitters– Anna by Region of Merit) trained by Gary Subratie, eventually got it right from a patient ride in soggy conditions in the seven-furlong (1,400 metres) non-winners of two event.
Sent off at odds of 3-1, the late-running Subbie, coming from the back of the pack, needed a fair pace to ensure a strong finish and he was duly rewarded with such, as Ten Carats (Wesley Henry) kept the field of eight runners honest from the break.
The S.A.S Syndicate-owned Subbie began bearing down on the leaders when urged by the powerful Robles as the pace quickened leaving the half-mile.
By the time Ten Carats and favourite Night Light (Aaron Chatrie) turned for home, Subbie was in striking distance on the outside and, with the momentum in his favour, he comfortably surged past for an easy two-length win — the second in his last five starts. They covered the distance in 1:28.0, behind splits of 23.0, 46.2 and 1:13.0.
The win also closed a double for the trainer-jockey combination, as they won the first race with Nuclear Commander. Robles, who was the top jock on the day, registered his other winner aboard Go Go Girl in the second event for trainer Gordon Lewis.
“It has been a long time since I won a triple, so getting three winners today (yesterday) speaks to my dedication and I thank trainer (Gary) Subratie, among others, for giving me some winners and I am really happy,” Robles said.
