Green calls for end to violence against women, children
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Floyd Green is appealing for an end to violence against our children and their families.
The call comes after the recent spate of killings in Clarendon, which claimed the lives of two children and one woman, as well as the injuring of others.
In a release from the Child Development Agency today, Green said that the nation has lost two potential nation builders by the hands of thugs, who have no regard for life.
“This incident in Clarendon clearly shows that these criminals are heartless to the highest level and have no regard for preserving lives of both children and families. The impact of these murders is devastating not only to adults but to children who have to undergo long term counselling to help with the obvious effects,” Green said.
He added that the National Plan of Action on Violence against Children (NPACV) is in the final stage of review and will be presented to Cabinet.
“The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information has partnered with the Ministry of National Security to look at the most effective method to curb crime and violence. With the implementation of Special Zones of Operation, I believe that we will see some benefits. Law and order must prevail and our children will live in a country with fear,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the CDA said Green also commented on the release of Statistics from the JCF and stated that it is disheartening to hear that over 30 children have died under tragic and violent circumstances since the start of the year.
He said, as a nation, “we need to take a stand and speak out against these murderers, who continuously prey on the weak.
“Many of you know who they are, so I am begging you to break the silence, and help to make Jamaica the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business.”
The CDA informed that officers from the agency’s First Responders Programme contacted relatives of both deceased, and have arranged for grief counselling and other support to be provided.
The CDA’s First Responders Programme is aimed at providing early intervention to children and families involved in violent and emergency situations.
