KINGSTON, Jamaica — Mayor of Kingston and St Andrew Delroy Williams has undertaken an initiative to coordinate relief effort for the island of Barbuda, which was hard-hit by Hurricane Irma, on behalf of the people of Kingston & St Andrew through several schools within the Corporate Area.

Williams in a statement today said that as a region our strength is best expressed in numbers.

“Before the establishment of CARICOM or the West Indies Federation we were always one people in different locations. In times of distress and disaster it is this unity that keeps us anchored and hopeful; it is the pack that survive,” Williams said.

He added that Caribbean neighbours, in particular Barbuda, have been shattered by the effects of Hurricane Irma leaving thousands of individuals homeless and without the basic necessities.

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne, on Wednesday said the island was uninhabitable and that close to 95 per cent of the structures were destroyed by the hurricane.

 “We invite all institutions to be a part of this drive as we aim to extend our hearts and resources to those in need during this very frightening time,” Williams expressed.

Students, parents and staff are being asked to participate in this effort by donating whatever items they can to aid those within the region.

The deadline for donations has been set for September 29.
