Govt should bring home Irma-affected J’cans in Eastern Caribbean, says PNP
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is calling on the Government to assist Jamaicans to return home from Irma-ravished islands in the Eastern Caribbean and the Turk and Caicos Islands.
“Reports coming to the party indicate widespread hardship and desperation amongst Jamaicans in the Eastern Caribbean, especially in the BVI in the wake of the catastrophic passage of Hurricane Irma, which destroyed infrastructure, homes and businesses, where many of our fellow nationals were employed primarily in the hospitality and service sectors,” the PNP said in a release today.
The PNP said it acknowledged difficulties associated with communication as well as both air and sea transportation to and from these hard-hit islands, but are still calling on the Government to immediately put concrete plans in place to repatriate these Jamaicans as quickly as possible.
“The PNP is aware that some Caribbean governments have started relocating their nationals with airlifts, and is calling on the Andrew Holness government to do the same. It is the least we can do for our own citizens to alleviate their plight and bring them to safety,” the PNP release said.
