THE Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) has asked Jamaicans who want to get on the next voters’ list to register by Friday, September 29.

People intending to have their name added to this list, which will be published on November 30, 2017, must apply at an EOJ constituency office before the cut-off date, and those who meet the September deadline should expect to receive their ID cards by mid-December.

“Electors who register after September 29 will have to wait until May 31, 2018 to be added to the list,” the EOJ said in a press release Wednesday. “A total of 15,589 registration applications have been received since the start of the registration period on April 1, 2017,” it added.

“The registration process is simple and applicants are asked to come prepared to have their photograph and fingerprints taken. Following the in-office application, the applicant’s residence will be verified and the application processed.

“Individuals who are already registered to vote do not need to reapply. However, the EOJ is encouraging registered electors who have changed addresses to visit their constituency office and apply for a transfer of registration. This will ensure that the elector’s information on the voters’ list remains up to date,” said the EOJ.

According to the EOJ, while registration is continuous, the voters’ list is updated every six months, on May 31 and November 30 of each year. The cut-off date for each list is two months prior to publication, to facilitate processing of applicants.

The voters’ list now stands at 1,888,168 as published on May 31, 2017. To be eligible for registration, you must be a Jamaican or Commonwealth citizen, at least 18 years of age, and must be ordinarily resident in Jamaica for at least 12 months prior to registration.
