After losing their first game of the season at home, Vauxhall High School registered their second win of the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup campaign on Tuesday, when they saw off Tarrant High 3-0, to move up to six points and into second spot on goal difference, in a very competitive Group D.

A first-half penalty from Javayn Weise and goals from Troy Nosworthy and Chade White in the second half, helped the Keon Broderick-coached team to a straight-forward home win and three valuable points, in a group where only St George’s College have managed three wins from three games.

Vauxhall High started the game kicking down the hill with Winston Brown and Troy Nosworthy leading the line and Javayn Weise playing in behind to engineer proceedings. The hosts were seeing most of the ball, but their poor decision-making in the final third meant they were unable to break down a stubborn Tarrant defence in which centre backs, captain Shannon Johnson and Malik Cocking were taking no prisoners.

Vauxhall High kept knocking at the door, however, and were rewarded for their efforts when the tricky Chade White weaved his way into the box, before being brought down by a defender to earn a penalty kick for his team.

Weise stepped up and calmly fired the ball into the roof of the net, to the right of Jonathan Currie in the 36th minute.

Tarrant were left cursing their luck at the end of the half when Akeam Brozon saw his left-footed drive hit the upright and roll across the face of goal and back into his path. His follow-up went crashing into the side netting under pressure, as the Vauxhall defenders recovered to deny Tarrant the equaliser in the second minute of added time.

Tarrant had the first chance to score in the second half, just two minutes after the resumption, but a tame free kick from Winston Jackson went straight to the limping Kacheive Wright in the Vauxhall goal.

Happy for the let-off, Vauxhall took a stranglehold over the game when Nosworthy fired into the roof of the net to leave the visitors shell-shocked at 2-0 down in the 50th minute.

The visitors were seeing more of the ball on their turn going down the hill and Duvan-Jay Parline fired a low drive to the left of Wright, who was equal to the task, pulling off a brilliant save to keep Tarrant off the scoresheet.

With a third of the game left to play, the influential White put the game to bed when he fired home a screamer from just outside the box.

Tarrant came close to scoring on a couple of occasions but were left cursing their luck as they remain winless and have a solitary point from three games so far.

Broderick was happy for another three points but was unhappy with the lack of discipline shown by his players ahead of a big match-up against group favourites St George’s College today.

“As it regards the result I am elated about it. Whenever we play, especially at home, we want to get three points and we did that today. The type of football that we play, we expect to keep possession as much as possible and exploit spaces behind the opponents,” he explained.

“We did that in patches today, but the performance was disappointing to say the least and it shows that we have a lot of things to work on, especially in the concentration aspect of the team. We made a lot of errors, especially at the back of the park and in the midfield as well, so we have some things to work on going into the game on Friday,” Broderick admitted.

St George’s College, who edged St Catherine High 1-0 in the televised game, remain perfect in Group D with nine points, while Vauxhall High, in second place on six points, lead Kingston Technical on goal difference.
