Gaynstead, Queen’s score big wins in ISSA netball

GAYNSTEAD High registered a crushing 74-2 win over Penwood High as the 2017 Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Urban and Rural Junior and Senior League netball competitions got underway across several venues on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, many-time All-island and Urban Junior League champions The Queen’s School crushed Charlie Smith High 57-2 in a Zone A encounter.

The Swallowfield-based Gaynstead, coach by Dalton Hinds, made easy work of the Rowan Byfield-coached Penwood from Olympic Gardens as they dominated the game from start to finish.

Amanda Pinkney, goal shooter, netted 50 goals from 54 attempts, and goal attack Austia Brooks scored 24 goals from 34 attempts.

Gaynstead took a commanding 20-1 lead at the end of the first quarter before going into the half-time interval with a 35-2 lead. They increased their lead with another 14 goals to 49-2 before closing out the match, winning comfortably in the end.

Gaynstead, the current reigning defending champions for both the All-island and Urban Junior Leagues, did not play their opening match against Penwood in the junior league. It has been reported that Penwood doesn’t have a junior team playing in the competition this season.

Even though it was a one-sided encounter, Hinds said he was happy for the victory.

‘This was our first match in Zone F and we are happy for the good start. However, were are looking forward for a much tougher encounter in our second outing against Holy Trinity High next week Thursday,” Hinds said.

Byfield said that his senior team is relatively a new one, with last year’s juniors moving up to the higher level.

“We have only two senior players still in line-up. However, the girls need to report for training if they are to produce any good performances,” he said.

Urban Junior and Senior Leagues continued yesterday with Alpha Academy taking on Vauxhall High, St Hugh’s High facing Campion College, Norman Manley High playing against Cumberland High, Donald Quarrie High up against St Mary’s College, Mona High tackling Tivoli High, St Catherine High facing Greater Portmore High, Bridgeport High playing St Andrew Technical High, and Merl Grove High taking on Hydel High.
