TWO albums that feature production from Jamaican-born producer Dwayne “Supa Dups” Chin-Quee have been nominated in the 18th Latin Grammy Awards. The albums are El Dorado by Shakira and Fenix by Nicky Jam.
The producer shared the news on his Instagram page on Wednesday.
“Just found out that I’m part of 2 albums nominated for the Latin Grammys! @shakira “ El Dorado” & @nickyjampr “Fenix”! I just feel so honored. Thanks to Nicky Jam and Shakira for the opportunity,” Chin-Quee’s post read.
El Dorado, the 11th studio album for Shakira, was released on May 26 via Sony Music Latin. It debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and number one on both the Top Latin Album and US Latin Pop Album charts. It has so far sold over 240,000 copies in the United States.
It is nominated in the Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album categories.
Supa Dups produced four songs: Nada, Amarillo, Comme Moi, and What We Said.
In an earlier interview with the Jamaica Observer, Chin-Quee explained how he got involved with the Shakira project.
“I got on the Shakira project through my relationship with Roc Nation. We did recording sessions in Barcelona, Spain. I flew to Spain about four times and Stephen McGregor met me there three times. We worked together on the track Armarillo,” he said at the time.
“This is the first album I’ve worked on that wasn’t in English. I met and worked with some amazing people while in Spain, including Rude Boyz from Medellin, Colombia, Shakira’s long-time producer; and song collaborator Luis Ochoua, and, of course, the queen herself, Shakira. I feel honoured and blessed that she allowed two Jamaicans, myself and Stephen McGregor, to work with her,” he continued.
On Nicky Jam’s album Fenix, Chin-Quee produced the songs I Can’t Forget You and No Te Puedo Olvidar. Another Jamaican producer, Tarik “Rvssian” Johnston-produced Amor Prohibido (which features Konshens and Sean Paul) and Me Enamoras.
Fenix was released via Sony Music Latin on January 20. It debuted at number 28 on the Billboard 200 album chart and number one on the Top Latin Albums chart. It is nominated in the Album of the Year category.
Shakira earned a total of six nominations for the November 16 event, which takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Nicky Jam has four nominations.
