On Tuesday, October 10, 2017, news of a major gun find in Kingston broke. As I read the various stories it became apparent that the guns and well over 400 rounds of ammunition were found in a barrel at a container terminal in Newport West. The question that immediately moved to the front of my mind was: Whose barrel is it?

The weapons — a Smith and Wesson pistol, one Browning 9mm pistol, one Claridge Hi- Tec Semi automatic pistol, one Jimenez Arms pistol, and one M-16 rifle — were tucked into a barrel containing food items destined for a Kingston 11 address.

Whoever they are, these terrorists have essentially declared war on Jamaica and are more concerned with supplying guns and ammunition than supplying their relatives and friends with food.

This is another major bust for the police, adding to a string of such stories in recent weeks.

As a citizen of Jamaica, I must commend the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigative Branch (C-TOC) on a job well done. I must also extend heartiest congratulations to the entire Jamaica Constabulary Force, who seem to be working tirelessly these last few weeks to capture and kill wanted men, intercept praedial larcenists, and seize illegal guns and ammunition. This is the kind of intelligence-led policing we want to see.

By removing these weapons there is no set figure on the amount of lives and property that have been saved.

With baited breath I await the next leg of the operation. The next leg, I suspect, will reveal whose barrel it is.
