Jockey Dick Cardenas and trainer Anthony Nunes combined to take the spotlight at Caymanas Park yesterday with a polished three-timer, one of which was Siempre Bueno in the Ahwhofah Sprint, a three-year-old and up Overnight Company over six furlongs (1,200m).

In so doing, Siempre Bueno posted a new stakes record of 1:11.2. The five-year-old chestnut horse ( M arket Rally– La Reina by Pat N Jac) erased the previous time of 1:12.1 set by Prolific Princess.

Once the gates opened Siempre Bueno went in front ,and it became a question of what would be the margin of victory.

Cardenas was very comfortable leaving the half mile, before opening up a bit on Dancing Queen (Wesley Henry) and Simply the Best (Paul Francis).

As soon as Siempre Bueno began to roll, he made a bad step at the furlong pole and was almost pulled up by Cardenas. But the jockey was able to straighten his mount and went on to win by a length over Dancing Queen. Shining Light (Aaron Chatrie up) was third. Siempre Bueno had splits of 22.2 and 44.3.

The duo had earlier registered wins with two-year-old debutant Isinbayeva in the first and Kanaloa in the sixth.

The English-bred filly Kalamata finally notched her first win in Jamaica in the day’s co-feature for the Royal Dad Trophy over 1,820 metres. Kalamata also provided jockey Robert Halledeen with a victory that is rare these days.

The four-year-old bay filly ( Sir Percy– Kalamkas) sat comfortably in third for most of the way before making a telling move at the half mile, but it took a while for her to quicken in the home stretch before she eventually earned the win, beating stable companion Western Warrior (Wesley Henry) by a neck, with Dontae (Dick Cardenas) third. Kalamata was timed in a respectable 1:55.4, behind splits of 26.3, 51.3, 1:15.3 and 1:41.2.
