Fishermen detained in Trinidad multi-million dollar drug bust
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Two fishermen are due to appear in court on today after they were arrested by police following a multi-million dollar drug bust in South Trinidad over the weekend.
Police said that the fishermen, ages 20 and 34, are expected to appear before a Siparia Magistrate following the exercise on Saturday that netted an estimated TT$40 million (One TT dollar =US$0.16 cents) in cocaine from a house in South Oropouche.
Lawmen believe that the two fishermen are pawns in a bigger drug ring and working to determine the major players in the drug operation.
Police said they had gone to the house and found 25 packets of cocaine hidden in a generator in one of the rooms. They said they had to cut open the generator in order to retrieve over 28 kilogrammes of high-grade cocaine.
The police said that the exercise was conducted based on intelligence provided by the Transnational Organised Crime Unit.
