Whether it is an evening out, a wedding, a graduation or that special date you’ve been counting down on the calendar, everyone loves to look fab. With the prevalence of make-up in the beauty sphere and with trending DIY make-up tutorials bombarding the Internet, many Under the Dryer ( UTD ) readers have learnt and perfected the art of applying their own make-up. Some, however, still need extra guidance to highlight those cheekbones and find a boost of confidence.

Twenty-seven-year-old make-up artist Shanea Francis, owner of Glimmer N’ Gloss Studios, may have already granted that wish to many. Residing in Eltham Park, Spanish Town, Francis decided to put her talent and hobby to good use a year ago, when she ventured full-time into make-up artistry.

“I always had a thing for dressing up and looking pretty,” she told UTD. “Make-up is a part of the process so I had to do my own thing. I was oftentimes complimented on my make-up abilities, so I knew I had to first hone my skills, then I could take it more seriously.” Indeed, her most frequently requested services now include birthday, graduation and bridal glams, along with special looks for photo shoots.

With the evolving world of beauty, Francis believes that, as a make-up artist, it is necessary for her to keep abreast of the new trends. She gave the best beauty trend nod to nude lips, but was unable to pinpoint one she would consider the worst. Instead, she shared with UTD that make-up is an art so whether or not she likes the trend, she is not at liberty to say one is worse than the other. To each his own, after all.

Francis will tell you that a make-up artist’s tools and products are their best friend. She says for a make-up artist or an enthusiast, a good contour palette and a Shana Amber Glow highlighter are must-have products.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s :

Spend enough time to blend out your make-up.

Always use a liquid eyeliner on eyelids.

Add lashes to brighten your eyes.

Line lips after applying lipstick rather than before.

Don’ts:

Avoid excessive contouring.

Don’t form your eyebrows broader than their natural width.

Don’t make your winged eyeliner too thick.

Never use a concealer that is more than three shades lighter than your foundation.

To UTD readers who would like to venture into make-up artistry, Francis suggests that they be patient and gradually hone their skills. “What you learn at school or from tutorials will be different, but you must find the best technique that works for you.” She also warns that, like everything else, aspiring make-up artists must ensure that they have a genuine passion for the art.
