CATHERINE HALL, St James — Kingston College became the second first-time semi-finalists in the FLOW Super Cup on Saturday night after a 4-1 demolition of Rusea’s High in their quarter-final game at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Rashawn Mackison scored the competition’s first hat-trick this season, including one in the second minute to start the rout as Kingston College joined fellow Walker Cup team Calabar High as first-time semi-finalists.

Shamar Bloomfield scored the other Kingston College goal with his first touch less than a minute after coming on the field, while Leonardo Fogarthy had tied up the scores for Rusea’s in the first half.

The second half of the game was held up for about 17 minutes after a power failure to the flood lights and it seemed to have affected the Rusea’s High team more as they failed to match the intensity of the Kingston College team prompting a walk out of most of the packed grandstand.

Kingston College now set up a second clash in two weeks with arch-rivals Jamaica College in Saturday’s semi-finals after the lone Ben Francis KO team St Elizabeth Technical and Calabar High meet at Sabina Park.

Earlier in the day, in the first game of the double-header, Jamaica College gave up two leads, but held on to edge Dinthill Technical 3-2, thanks to two goals from the instrumental Tyreek Magee.

In Friday’s opening double-header at the same venue, Calabar High upset Ben Francis KO champions Clarendon College 4-3 in a shoot-out, while St Elizabeth Technical beat St Andrew Technical 4-3 on penalties after they had played out a 1-1 regulation scoreline.

The lopsided situation of three Corporate Area teams and just the one rural area school flipped the script from last year when it was three rural area teams and eventual champions Wolmer’s Boys making it to the top four.

Kingston College’s win, on the back of their loss to Jamaica College in the final of the Walker Cup KO earlier in the week, was only their second win in three years in the competition.

The ‘Purples’ lost in the first round at the Montego Bay Sports Complex to Glenmuir High in 2015 and then beat Vere Technical in the first round last year before bowing out in the quarter-finals to eventual champions Wolmer’s Boys.

After watching Jamaica College being made to work hard against a hard-running and hard-tackling Dinthill Technical team, Kingston College came out of the blocks fast and took the lead early.

Mackison put them ahead in the second minute of play before they got a chance to settle down, tapping in from a crowd of players after goalkeeper St Michael Edwards failed to gather a corner and the ball slipped from his hands. The prolific striker plucked the ball out of the air and in to the goal.

After being pinned down in their own area for a long time, Rusea’s brought their crowd alive in the 24th minute when they equalised after a lightning-fast counter-attack that started in their own 18-yard box.

Fogarthy played the ball to Daniel Reid just inside the Kingston College area, and after racing past the lone defender Javain Brown, Reid took the ball to the touch line and passed it across the goal area where Fogarthy fired it past goalkeeper Nico Jolly.

Mackison was at it again in the 33rd minute to restore his team’s lead when he finished off a play in the Rusea’s half that included no fewer than five players.

The ball was swung from the left side to the right when it was played down the flank and crossed to the middle where Mackison, who was allowed way too much space, fired it low to Edwards’ left and into the goal.

Bloomfield, who replaced Trayvone Reid, made it 3-1 for Kingston College and he was in the right place to score past Edwards from close range after the Rusea’s High defence failed once more to get the ball out of their area.

After making two stupendous saves, a lapse by Edwards gifted Makison his third goal to complete his hat-trick.
