Tivoli blank Humble Lion 2-0
Two second-half goals by Howard Morris and Colorado Murray propelled Tivoli Gardens to a 2-0 win over Humble Lion in their Red Stripe Premier League match at the Edward Seaga Complex yesterday.
Morris opened the scoring in the 57th minute, heading home a Tykvin Garnett cross before Murray slotted home the second in the 75th minute, also from a Garnett pass. It was Murray’s third goal of the season after scoring twice against Waterhouse last week.
Tivoli Gardens, who were notching their second consecutive win and their fourth in their last six games, jumped two places into fourth on 15 points.
Humble Lion’s inconsistent form continued which saw them suffer their fifth defeat from nine games and slipped a spot to ninth with eight points.
On a day when the Tivoli Gardens club honoured two retired stalwarts in goalkeeper Edsel Scott and utility player Kasai Hinds for their distinguished service to the team that spanned 20 years each, the current generation gave them a fitting send-off with a sterling display.
It was a well-deserved win for Tivoli Gardens as they showed more verve than an aged Humble Lion team that seems to be in need of some youthful renewal.
Winning coach Omar Edwards said his team did not play well in the first half, but stepped up to end the game on a high.
“We managed to ride out the first half and in the second half we made some changes and they came on and had a significant impact on the game. We continued to improve the team offensively and this afternoon we managed to score two goals,” said Edwards, a former national Under-17 assistant coach.
Lennie Hyde, Humble Lion head coach, was clearly disappointed and pointed to defensive errors that cost his team the game.
“We didn’t handle the long balls and we not playing football. We played 90 minutes of football and we didn’t create a chance, and when you are not scoring, you not supposed to be giving up goals like that,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, Sandals South Coast notched their first win in top-flight football when they edged Boys’ Town 1-0 at Frome. Obrian Bent scored the all-important goal in time added on.
Sandals now move to six points, the same as Boys’ Town, but remain at the bottom of the 12-team league.
At the Spanish Town Prison Oval, champions Arnett Gardens and Portmore United battled to 0-0 draw and maintained their positions atop of the league. Arnett Gardens remained first with 19 points and Portmore are second with 17 points.
At Stadium East, Cavalier SC and UWI FC played to a 1-1 draw. Anthony Greenland put UWI in front after 18 minutes, while Nikoy Christian brought Cavalier level from the penalty spot in the 44th minute.
