Inmate shot dead after hospital escape attempt
A prisoner, who allegedly attempted to escape custody while on a visit to the National Chest Hospital yesterday, has been shot dead.
He has been identified as Kevin Fletcher, who was serving a life sentence at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre.
In a release, the Department of Correctional Services said the inmate was killed by a corrections officer.
The Department of Correctional Services said it received a report that the inmate was being treated by a doctor who asked that the handcuffs be removed.
Following the removal of the handcuffs, the release said, the inmate tried to escape and was shot. The incident occurred about 12:30 pm yesterday.
The department said the police and the Independent Commission of Investigations are investigating the matter.
