NCAA basketball event tips off in MoBay
ROSE HALL, St James — Jamaica will host an NCAA basketball event for the first time, starting today when the Jamaica Class basketball event featuring seven Division One teams gets underway at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.
In the first game at 2:00 pm, Colorado State will meet Tulane University followed by Fordham against Florida State University at 6:00 pm, with Long Island University-Brooklyn facing Miami (Ohio), starting at 8:30 pm.
The event continues tomorrow with one game, LIU-Brooklyn against Hartford, set to start at 5:30 pm, with three more games set for Sunday’s final day.
Six of the games will be broadcast live in the United States on the CBS network.
Florida State University, who play in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), could have a slight advantage having played games here in a pre-season tour.
American college teams, in basketball and American football, routinely play regular season games away from the mainland, in locations such as Hawaii, Puerto Rico and other tropical locations. This, however, is the first time that Jamaica will host games at this level.
