High-riding Herbert Morrison take aim at Holland
HOLLAND, Trelawny — Herbert Morrison Technical will continue their quest for a perfect season in both sections of the ISSA Western Conference boys’ basketball competition this afternoon when they travel to Holland High for a double-header as the regular season draws to a close. The double defending champions are unbeaten so far this season, winning all seven games in the Under-16 section and all eight in the Under-19 after beating St James High and Spot Valley, respectively, at Green Pond High on Tuesday.
York Castle High and Holland High also split their games on Tuesday, York Castle winning the junior game, but lost in the senior competition.
At Green Pond, Herbert Morrison rolled past St James 59-24 in the Under-16 and handed Spot Valley their first loss 81-44.
In the Under-16 game, Anthony Thorpe had a double-double 15 points and 15 rebounds as Kevin Smith led with 19 points as they dominated in all areas of the game.
David Gordon and Alek Gilchrist both had double-doubles in the Under-19 game where three players scored in double digits led by Brendan Dawkins’ 31 points.
Gordon scored 22 points and had 15 rebounds, while Gilchrist scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds.
Roger Hines also had a double-double for Spot Valley with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Shavon Moulton scored 13 points.
At York Castle, the home team won back-to-back games in the Under-16 category, turning back Holland High 47-26 despite a game-high 16 points from Holland High’s Flawless Travers, more than half his team’s total. Mario Brown also got 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.
Lennon Richards scored 10 points for York Castle, who led 14-8, 20-12 and 27-20 at the end of the first three quarters.
Holland High came from behind in the senior game to win by eight points (55-47), with Owen Rodney and Shavon Wallace combining for 39 points.
York Castle led 21-13 after the first quarter, but Holland rallied in the second to lead 25-20 at half-time before York Castle cut the deficit to one point at the end of the third quarter 37-41, but the visitors were too strong in the fourth quarter and ran away with the win.
Rodney scored 20 points, while Wallace had 19 as Daniel Watkiss led York Castle with a game-high 22 points.
