Jamaica to contest B draw at World Squash Champs
Jamaica finished third in its group after losing 0-3 to Scotland as the round-robin segment of the Men’s World Team Squash Championships came to an end in Marseilles, France, Wednesday.
Reigning All Jamaica and Caribbean Champion Chris Binnie started the bidding ,but went down 11-7, 11-1, 11-6 to world number 24, Alan Clyne. The fate of the team then rested with Jamaica’s number two player Lewis Walters, but he lost 11-9, 12-10, 11-6 in a blistering battle with world number 40, Greg Loban.
Bruce Burrowes then faced the pressure to stave off Kevin Moran, but the Scotsman got the better of the Jamaican and prevailed 11-4, 11-8, 11-5.
The third place finish means Jamaica will miss out on the knockout round of the competition which will feature the top 16 teams. However, there is still a lot to play for as the team will now contest the B draw which means another three days of stiff competition to settle places 17 to 24.
“The tournament is far from over for us because we still have to play the rounds of the B draw which is no easy task when you consider we’re up against teams that are among the world’s top 24,” Jamaica team manager Douglas Beckford explained.
“So while we are obviously disappointed that we didn’t make the top 16 we know we still have a lot of work to do so we’re not losing focus,” he added.
The Jamaicans will be back in action today when the first round of B draw matches will be played. The Championships will run until Sunday.
