Younger Chanderpaul, Johnson usher Jaguars to victory over Pride

PROVIDENCE, Guyana (CMC) — Half-centuries from Tagenarine Chanderpaul and skipper Leon Johnson formalised an eight-wicket victory for runaway leaders and reigning three-time champions Guyana Jaguars over Barbados Pride in the Regional 4-Day Championship on Sunday.

Chanderpaul, son of former West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, finished unbeaten on 62 and Johnson made 61, as the Jaguars, successfully chased down 178 for victory to complete victory close to an hour before the scheduled close on the final day of their fifth-round match at the Guyana National Stadium.

The pair shared 117 for the second wicket to ensure the home team had little trouble making it over the finish line which came when Test batsman Vishaul Singh struck part-time off-spinner Kenroy Williams for the last of his four boundaries in 22 not out.

The result gave the Jaguars their fourth victory of the season and they have now extended their lead at the top of the table, moving to 86.4 points, having gained 21.6 from this match. Pride have now moved to 47.8 having collected 5.6.

Keemo Paul was named Player-of-the-Match.

West Indies “A” Team fast bowler Keon Joseph ensured there was no comeback story for the Pride, when he collected the last three Pride wickets cheaply and the visitors were bowled out for 197 in their second innings.

Joseph ended with 4-38 from 12.5 overs, but left-hander Jonathan Carter showed some fight with a defiant, top score of 53 for the Pride and left-handed wicketkeeper/batsman Mario Rampersaud was not out on 27.

Jaguars were 31 without loss at lunch before off-spinner Ashley Nurse had opener Chanderpaul Hemraj caught at slip for 21 in the third over after the interval.

The Jaguars were 36 for one, but Johnson came to the crease and with the younger Chanderpaul eliminated any doubt the result with crisp batting.

They carried the Jaguars to 106 for one at tea and continued merrily to reach their half-centuries following the break.

Johnson fell however, when he was bowled by Keon Harding with 25 needed, but Singh came and quickly knock them off.

Earlier, Pride, starting the day on 126 for seven, were bowled out about an hour after the scheduled start.

Carter hit some typically flambuoyant stroke before he was caught at slip off Joseph after 45 minutes before Jomel Warrican and Keon Harding both fell caught behind off Joseph after offering token and no resistance, respectively.

Jaguars host winless Windward Islands Volcanoes at this venue next round, starting next Thursday, at the same time that Leeward Islands Hurricanes host the Pride at Warner Park in St Kitts.
