Jamaica back on IMO Category C
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s candidature to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Category C was successful over the weekend at the assembly of the organisation in London, England.
According to a release from the Transport Ministry, Jamaica garnered 120 of the possible 159 votes in the category to top Caribbean arch rival the Bahamas for the coveted place during the 2018/2019 biennium.
Transport and Mining Minister, Lester ‘Mike’ Henry, who led Jamaica’s delegation to London was elated at the outcome.
Henry has been in London for the past week, where he bolstered Jamaica’s campaign that was being led by Rear Admiral Peter Brady.
Henry said that “this is a proud moment for Jamaica to regain its rightful place on the council and to champion the cause of the Caribbean region in keeping pace with developments in the maritime industry and environment.”
According to Henry his presence in London signifies the seriousness and commitment of the Government of Jamaica in adhering to the statutes of the IMO, but equally important to ensure best practices in protecting the marine environment.
Henry said that with the recent elevation of the Caribbean Maritime Institute to university status, the foundation is solidly laid for the development Logistics hub and all the attendant activities, which will result in Jamaica becoming the regional powerhouse in marine affairs.
Henry returns to the island December 6.
