Miller-inspired Scorpions make light work of Volcanoes
Nikita Miller-inspired Jamaica Scorpions made light work of Windward Islands Volcanoes on yesterday’s fourth and final day, wrapping up a 10-wicket win before lunch in the regional cricket match at Sabina Park.
The left-arm finger spinner and captain of the Scorpions accounted for three of the four wickets to fall in the morning to help dismiss the Volcanoes for 186 in their second innings after they resumed from their overnight score of 169-6.
The 35-year-old Miller had sensational figures of 8-54 from 32 overs and five balls for a match haul of 13 wickets. He also contributed with the bat, striking a patient 52 in the first innings to support middle order batsman Fabian Allen, who made 105 not out, and opener John Campbell (71).
Needing just 35 runs for victory, the Scorpions breezed to the target inside six overs without the loss of a wicket. The left-hand opening pair of Trevon Griffith and Campbell remained unbeaten on 24 and 10, respectively.
Scores: Volcanoes 200 (83 ovs) & 186 (80.5 ovs); Scorpions 352 (126 ovs) & 35-0 (5.4 ovs)
Miller, who captured 10 wickets in the previous game away to Leeward Islands Hurricanes, was pleased with his outstanding bowling effort against the Volcanoes. However, he said the deciding factor in the game was the 141-run, ninth-wicket stand between him and Allen that gave the Scorpions a first-innings lead of 152 runs.
“In terms of our bowling, I think all the bowlers did well to restrict Windward Islands. I’m happy with the return and I’m happy with the wickets,” the Scorpions skipper told journalists during a post-match interview yesterday.
“The guys batted well in the first innings. Myself and Allen had a good partnership overall. I think that partnership won us the game.”
He said the flat Sabina Park pitch meant plenty emphasis was placed on getting a significant lead.
“Right throughout the innings I told him we need a 100-run lead because both of us knew that the pitch was good. We knew that when they bat again it would still be good for batting, so we didn’t want to be chasing a big total in our second innings,” Miller explained.
There was the odd shining moment for the Volcanoes. Left-hand opener Devon Smith batted through the Volcanoes’ first innings to compile 116 not out, while off-spinner Shane Shillingford took 7-94 in the Scorpions’ first innings.
But expectedly, Miller’s opposite number Tyrone Theophile cut a frustrated figure as he recalled areas where the visitors fell short.
“We started well in the first innings, but we lost wickets in clusters. Our batting keeps letting us down as well, and I also haven’t got runs this season. We had Smith batting and it was just for somebody to stay with him, and even in the field we haven’t been taking our chances from the start of the season,” the Volcanoes captain told the Jamaica Observer.
Earlier yesterday, the Volcanoes resumed with middle order batsman Roland Cato on 41 and Shillingford on eight, but neither lasted long.
Cato, who faced 13 balls without adding a run to his overnight score, was caught by wicketkeeper Steven Taylor off the relentless Miller. Shillingford made his way to 12 before he was also caught by Taylor, but this time off the bowling of medium pacer Derval Green.
Miller, grabbed 5-60 in the first innings, then capped off a magnificent outing with the wickets of Kenneth Dember (nought) and Sherman Lewis (six).
Griffith and Campbell wasted no time in pursuit of the small target as the Scorpions earned back-to-back wins this season.
