Gun, ammo recovered after man challenges cops to gunfight
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica —The police yesterday seized a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol with a magazine containing 14 9mm cartridges during a gun battle between the security forces and a man in Greenwich District, Bethel Town yesterday.
Reports from the Bethel Town police are that about 12:45 pm, a joint police/military team was conducting patrol duties in the area when they encountered a man they believed could assist with an ongoing murder investigation.
On approach of the team, the man allegedly opened gunfire, which was returned. The man ran, leaving behind the firearm and ammunition.
The police said it is not known if the man was injured, but no member of the security forces suffered injuries.
In light of the incident, the police commissioner is appealing to criminals to desist from opening fire at law enforcement officers, but instead surrender peacefully.
“For your safety as well as that of the police and innocent citizens, do not confront the lawmen,” said Police Commissioner George Quallo.
Citizens are also encouraged to assist as best they can by sharing information of suspicious and/or criminal activities by calling police 119 emergency number, Crime Stop at 811, or the nearest police station. They may also share information anonymously via the Stay Alert App.
