Portmore fest gives to single moms
Mothers In Crisis will once again receive proceeds from the staging of Portmore Music Fest scheduled for the UDC car park in Portmore, St Catherine, on December 29.
According to event organisers, they are hoping to donate 20 per cent of this year’s proceeds to the non-government organisation.
“We chose Mothers In Crisis because they motivate women, promote development and even go into schools to promote this as well. We find that a lot of low-income families flock to Portmore and they have a lot of challenges. Women are often left by the fathers to fend for their children and deal with all the family issues. Mothers In Crisis is supporting women which is the equivalent to supporting the society,” Tameka Chevannes, publicist for the event, told the Jamaica Observer.
Last year, Mothers In Crisis received 22 industrial machines purchased from proceeds of Portmore Music Fest’s inaugural staging.
Officially launched in 2005, the Portmore-based Mothers In Crisis currently houses 10 females. The institution provides support and training for low-income, single mothers.
For this year’s staging of Portmore Music Fest, Chevannes said patrons are in for a treat.
“We are including artistes who are not necessarily from Portmore, like Wayne Wonder. Mr Easy is flying down and he’s gonna be performing with Frisco Kid. We have Tommy Lee Sparta, who was a former member of the Portmore Gaza Empire — it’s gonna be his first time performing in Portmore in years,” said Chevannes.
She said the aim is for the fest to become a signature event for the Sunshine City.
The line-up also includes Bounty Killer, I-Octane, I-Wayne, Cocoa Tea, Iba Mahr and Ikaya.
The event’s launch is slated for Alive, formerly Famous Nightclub, in Portmore St Catherine on December 13.
