The trainers react to She’s A Maneater’s Diamond Mile romp
Trainers reacted positively and analytically to one of local racing’s noblest achievements on the track posted by She’s A Maneater. Bred and owned by Winston Kong, trained by Wayne DaCosta, and ridden by Dane Nelson, the three-year-old filly accomplished a feat that no other horse – colt or filly – has done by winning, in one season, the Triple Crown (1000 Guineas, Jamaica Derby and Jamaica St Leger); then the Superstakes, followed by the Diamond Mile.
Here are the views of a few trainers.
RYAN DARBY
To accomplish what She’s A Maneater has done is not only about being the best or being a very good racehorse. Everything has to fall into place, which is very difficult to achieve in a single season: to win the Triple Crown, to win the Superstakes and also to win the Diamond Mile is quite remarkable. To achieve this in any one season you have to have racing luck in order to peak at the right time. So it is not only about being the best horse, it is also about being fortunate enough to have all these necessary and different elements come together at the right time. I knew that earlier in the year she had pulled a muscle which set her preparations back for about a month, but she recovered from it nicely and came back at the right time to catch the Fillies Guineas. Just before the Guineas, she was having problems around the back area, but trainer DaCosta has done a marvellous job of keeping her sound to compete in all the major races after she recovered from her pulled muscle.
You can win the Triple Crown, you can win the Superstakes, you can win the Diamond Mile – but to win all five of them within nine months, I do not see it happening again any time soon.

Well, I thought it was a good and impressive victory overall. She did what she had to do to beat the best in the land, and in so doing she [confirmed her status as] the best horse that is running on the track today. I think that she is a wonderful horse – very versatile. I am sure this is not the last we will be seeing of She’s A Maneater, as I expect more of her as she will be going places. She’s not great to look at, but I will tell you that horses come in all shapes, sizes and looks, and if their hearts are in the right position they will run for you today, tomorrow and every other day. This is what She’s A Maneater has done for her connections, and I congratulate them for this truly outstanding achievement.
COLLIN BLAIR
She’s A Maneater performed as was expected. I expected her to do well because of the fact that her preparation since the Superstakes showed that trainer Wayne DaCosta gave her light training. She was fresh as a lily. I thought that she was fresher than all the other horses in the race. This could be the reason why she spread-eagled the field. Definitely a horse that looks unbeatable at present, for really no local horse can beat her going any distance. Based on her conformation, she is shaped like a colt, and it is very gratifying to see her progress at varying distances. This is a credit to trainer DaCosta, and I congratulate owner/breeder Winston Kong for producing a magnificent filly.
SPENCER CHUNG
A great performance. As a three-year-old filly, her performance is unheard of because the Diamond Mile is a pretty new event on our racing calendar. Before this, you had the Triple Crown and the Superstakes, and to come back three weeks later to win an Open Grade One event with older horses against colts and everybody, and win that one, it just shows you her versatility and resilience, as this was never done before. By her resilient effort, she has set a new bar. It is possible that She’s A Maneater is the best local-bred three-year-old filly we have ever seen.
PATRICK FONG
Over the past eight years, she is the best filly that has [emerged]. Maybe she is the best horse, but I have not done any investigation to really check it out. Definitely, she is the best filly. She never surprises me, as when she was running in her early days, she looked like a good racehorse and she continued to win good races. [From that time] she gave the indication that she was a filly with class, and she blossomed into something special. So I consider her one of the great racers of our time who will continue to improve with time. She is just three years old, and with steady improvement she could prove very hard to beat when she’s four.
EDWARD HAMILTON
What can anyone say about She’s A Maneater except that she is an outstanding thoroughbred? The best local-bred filly to race here, and one of the best horses of all time. For a filly to have done so much in one racing season is just amazing, and the fact that she is just three years old says a lot. [To win] the Triple Crown, Superstakes and now the Diamond Mile is a great accomplishment, one that we might never be able to see again. She’s A Maneater is really a great racehorse. Let’s see what she will do next year when she is more mature.
