Simply The Best (Of 2017)

Part 1

EVENTS, people, places and things are always the pliable objects of desire for this magazine in which international travel, runway fashion, the art of entertaining, and event culture get filtered through our prism from edition to edition. SO calls back the moments we gloriously showcased between our pages in 2017, from the features, the dedicated issues and interviews with stylish newsmakers.

THROUGH OUR EYES

January 15, 2017

Fresh on the heels of The Next Wave SO invited six engaging young Jamaican female executives Nasha Monique Douglas, Catherine Goodall, Erin Mitchell, Jaime Bicknell, Carla Hollingsworth and Lyndsey McDonnough to contribute to our publication. The result — features that range from drinking wine with your favourite Jamaican staple to “Yu pretty fi a fat girl!” In between, there’s a thought-provoking look at what it means to represent a brand, a scavenger hunt to find just the right place to imbibe, a night out at Goodaz Girls and finally, notes on living a healthy lifestyle.

CIAO, ROMA…

February 19, 2017

SO Editor Novia McDonald-Whyte jetted to Rome for the exclusive reveal of the stories behind the Campari Red Diaries 2017 and the short film Killer in Red, directed by Paolo Sorrentino and starring Hollywood actor Clive Owen, and explored the ancient global city.

HAVING A ‘BALL’

February 26, 2017

Hanover Charities celebrated not only the 60th anniversary of its philanthropic existence but also the Diamond Jubilee staging of its The Sugar Cane Ball. SO registered the jet set and Second City guests, dressed in their ‘Sparkle Like A Diamond Black Tie Optional’ best, who attended the intersection of glamour and power, for an auction, dinner and dancing.

WE JAMMIN’ STILL

March 12, 2017

SO contributing shutterbug Dwayne Watkins and his TeamDWP Studios By Dwayne Watkins crew returned to the ‘Forged From the Love of Liberty’ republic to chronicle the plumage and colour of its cultural festival. For our annual Trinidad & Tobago Carnival issue, we chipped alongside the Origins-themed band YUMA (Young and Upwardly Mobile Adults) to the infectious strains of the 2017 soca songs, in this visual digest from Carnival Tuesday on February 28.

IN HOT PURSUIT: THE AUTO ISSUE

March 26, 2017

With the ATL Automotive-engineered Revolution Auto Show held on March 11 and 12 in our rear-view mirror but serving as active inspiration, we’re traversing the highway to aspirational driving luxury and making pit stops to spotlight a number of the world’s priciest autos, the plushest interiors, and filmdom’s iconic wheels. We offered up a sneak peek at the business district’s hottest new address — Porsche’s showroom space.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO ‘DINER’?

April 2, 2017

A chic appointment in white was the dictate on the social calendar for March 26 as JUTC-chartered buses snaked their way through the capital’s busy thoroughfares.

Aboard: guests styled to the nines in white-appropriate ensembles, en route to the return of the highly anticipated third staging of Le Dîner en Blanc Kingston. Destination: a traditional well-kept surprise that this year — as the buses, dispatched from the Liguanea Club, Hope Gardens, and JMMB’s Haughton Terrace locations — was revealed at Devon House as well-heeled passengers, toting picnic baskets disembarked, making ordered queues and blanketing the lawns in front of the Georgian-style Kingston landmark mansion as a sea of white.
