UTech student wins $100,000 in Ward Theatre design competition
UNIVERSITY of Technology, Technology (UTech) student Adori Lewis on Tuesday walked away with $100,000 after he won the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) and UTech Caribbean School of Architecture (CSA) Ward Theatre design competition.
The challenge, according to a release from the KSAMC, was thrown out to all final-year students of the UTech CSA programme, with the shortlisted seven students presenting their designs in front of mayor of Kingston Senator Delroy Williams, KSAMC councillors, guests judges, and members of staff, on Tuesday.
The KSAMC said APEC Consultants Limited assisted students with the technical aspects of the project.
Shane Jacelon, who placed second, walked away with $60,000, while Megan Veira received $40,000 after finishing third.
The release said all seven finalists were awarded $20,000 grants toward their tuition for the final semester.
Williams on Tuesday expressed how pleased he was with the quality of work done, and said that the council would be incorporating ideas from most of the submissions, where possible, into the final design for the lobby area and first floor of the Ward Theatre.
“We will be working closely with the Caribbean School of Architecture on many other projects to put the imagination and creativity of the youth to work. They have inspired me with these presentations and in my estimation, today they are all winners,” Williams said.
The KSAMC has undertaken the renovation of the Ward Theatre as one of it’s major projects for the year. The theatre was donated to the city of Kingston by Charles Ward on December 15, 1912.
