KINGSTON, Jamaica — There is an outpouring of condolences on social media following news of the death of veteran journalist Ian Boyne this morning at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

One Twitter user sharing the sentiment of many said “The entire Jamaica mourns today. Sleep in Peace veteran.”

Boyne was recuperating after he was rushed to the University Hospital on Saturday, December 2.

“We have lost one of the most intelligent critical thinking well written and expressive persons in Jamaica today. There is so much I learnt from Ian Boyne without ever meeting this man. True definition of greatness…may his soul RIP,” said another.

Athlete, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce tweeted that her heart is heavy. Sprint legend Usain Bolt, stumped for words tweeted “Wow.. #RIP #Profile ”.

Many also used the opportunity to make quips about his style of interviewing especially on his personality television series Profile — the longest running seasonal show on local television. It features successful and remarkable personalities, many of whom overcame significant hardships.

Profile celebrated 30 years this March, earning Boyne many accolades, including congratulations from Prime Minister Andrew Holness who said it was admirable that the programme, which represents “the power of good journalism”, was still on air when internationally, successful programmes rarely surpass 25 years.

“Losing #IanBoyne is like losing an uncle who always had wise words and expected the best from you at all time. We lost family”, added another.

Another said his death “symbolises the beginning of the ending of a generation. Life is finite and all we can do is make the best and leave a legacy. #Ianboyne left a legacy and it will live on beyond his mortality. #SIP to the great one #Ianboyne.”
