“Murphy’s Law” no longer applies — as all is well
Any trainer with fewer than 10 horses under his care, who can post two winners from that barn from as many starts, must be hopeful for a promising season. One such trainer is Dale Murphy.
The former United Racehorse Trainers’ Association of Jamaica president is a very patient individual who takes things in stride, but when opportunity knocks he is quick to respond. Murphy failed to saddle a winner last season, but has saddled two in two race days this season.
Horse racing is classified under the banner of being a sport and a hobby, but Murphy describes it as “hard work”, and when rewarded with a win or two, the trainer is left in high spirits.
“This is the second race day of the year and it is the second win, so it is nothing more than excellent and the irony of it all is that I have been a racehorse trainer since the year 2007. This is year 11; last year was year 10, and last year was the only year I did not saddle a winner in consecutive years as a racehorse trainer.
“I must give thanks for Markofaprince. The owner claimed this horse sometime last year but he ( Markofaprince) always had issues in term of lameness. But he was claimed out of the race and we no longer have him. He was coming from the $450,000 claiming tag from where the owner got him, and we raced him in the optional claiming up until today (Saturday) when he was claimed for $350,000,” Murphy explained.
With Markofaprince being claimed out of the race, Murphy said that he must now look ahead and hopefully he can achieve more winners down the line.
“I have two promising two-year-olds that are jointly owned by two associates and myself that I bought at the Yearling Sale last year. The next two-year-old race will be in June, so those two are for the future.
“I also have three three-year-olds, one of which is afflicted with a lameness issue and may have to be euthanised. This therefore leaves me with two two-year-olds and two three-year-olds and a five-year-old (NW2) that I have just acquired. I have a barn that can hold seven horses, so we have to try and claim some more horses and take it from there,” Murphy explained.
