Local Govt minister expresses sadness over deadly Place of Safety fire
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie has expressed “deep regret” at the death of two juvenile wards at Walker’s Place of Safety here, following a devastating fire this morning.
“I am advised that efforts were made by people at the place of safety to get them out, even before the call was made to the Half-Way-Tree Fire Station at 12:08 this morning, but the fire was so intense that no further intervention could be made,” said McKenzie.
McKenzie said that the firefighters from Half-Way-Tree were assisted by units and personnel from York Park, Rollington Town and Stony Hill fire stations. He commended the 29 firefighters who ensured that the blaze did not spread to neighbouring properties.
The local government minister said that the Jamaica Fire Brigade has already began an investigation into the cause or causes of the fire, which destroyed the place of safety.
