Barbican FC cop KSAFA Super League mid-season title
Second -half substitute Malik Douglas scored a 91st-minute freakish goal from a corner kick to give Barbican FC a 2-1 victory over Mountain View FC in the Magnum/KSAFA Super League mid-season final at the Constant Spring Complex on Friday night.
Deshawn Morrison put Barbican ahead from a 44th- minute goal-line strike, but with six minutes of regulation time remaining, Michael Isaacs found himself in a similar position at the same goal to equalise for Mountain View.
To get to the competition’s mid-season final, Barbican topped Zone A with 16 points ahead of Molynes United FC and Maverley/Hughenden FC on 12 points each in that order, while Mountain View topped Zone B with 15 points ahead of Browns Town and Central Kingston on 13 points each.
It was the first time that the leaders of their respective zones would have crossed swords in the competition and a close battle to be top brass was anticipated. Barbican, though, had with a slight edge as they emerged from the throes of the group of death to reach the final unbeaten.
Meanwhile, Mountain View, though consistent, had an easier passage against Browns Town FC and Central Kingston FC.
An elated, winning Head Coach David Laylor said: “Victory here is a very good team booster for us going back into the league. We are very pleased and quite happy with this type of advantage at this stage of our preparation as we have our eyes set on returning to the Premier League.
“We are also quite happy with the silverware, but we are more interested in the league itself. This, therefore, is good recompense to the guys for their hard work, but the struggle has now begun in earnest. In getting to this point, for the most part we were disciplined with a little lapse here and there, with the goalkeeper fumbling a ball which resulted in our opponents profiting from it with a goal.
“This apart, I think with a bit more focus we should do well in the Super League and eventually end by winning.”
His counterpart Jeremiah Pettigrew lamented the lapses committed by his players and promised to make amends for the next half the season.
