Even though music runs through his genes, newcomer Projexx is banking on his own resources to take him to the top.

He is the son of producer Lloyd “John John” James and grandson of Lloyd “King Jammy” James, arguably dancehall’s greatest producer.

“I wouldn’t say that having Jammys as my grandfather hasn’t helped me in terms of getting recording opportunities or making inroads musically. But majority of the people that I have done work with are not aware of my musical heritage until long after,” the deejay told Jamaica Observer.

The James dynasty has deep roots in the Kingston community of Waterhouse. Projexx’s uncles, Trevor “Baby G” James and Jammy “Jam 2” James, are also music producers.

“Where my learning about music is concerned, I was self-taught. I received the love and a good ear for music. But I had to figure it out on my own,” the 19-year-old artiste shared.

He has built a profile on social media. His current single The Vybz, produced by B-Rad Productions, has attracted significant views on YouTube.

People who tune in will not get the run of the mill dancehall act.

“In music I bring fresh sounds like sonically speaking. I have a lot of musical styles so I’m basically a melting pot of musical genres,” he said.

Projexx began taking music seriously while in third form at Jamaica College. His first song, Sighting, was done while he was in high school.

Though he has done songs for his uncles, he has recorded for other producers including Markus Myrie (Markus Records) and Silent Addie.

Things, he stated, have been good so far.

“I’ve been doing the right things, making good songs, working with good producers and trying to perfect my craft. I make beats for myself as well, so I am bringing the full package,” said Projexx. “I feel that since the start of 2018 I have gotten much better, and with all this talent and positive energy around me, it’s just a matter of time before I get the big break.”
